Religion #1: Atheism

So for my first act as mayor I will close the church! OK sorry I'm watching the Robot Chicken Christmas special. Anyway, this was bound to be my first religious topic because I am an Atheist (well technically I'm an agnostic atheist but we will get to that later).

Oh before I start I want to make something clear. Atheism is not really a religion it's a rejection of religion.

What exactly is an Atheist? Well it's quite simple an Atheist is someone who either does not believe that there is a god or thinks that there probably isn't a god. Why do they think this? Because of the lack of evidence of any god, it's that easy. Now there are two types of atheists, the most common ones are the agnostic atheist. These are the ones that are, in my opinion, more rational because they think that there is probably not a god but they do not say that they are 100% certain about this, and if they do see evidence of a god they will probably convert to that religion. Then there are the Hard Atheists who say that they are 100% certain that there is not a god.

So where do we get our morals from? Most of us get our morals from common sense or having empathy for the other people, just like most Christians ( I'm scared about the Christians that if they didn't have the bible they would rape, steal, kill, etc. because I can't envision someone doing these things just because there are no written rules about it). Anyway most people do not get their morals from religious texts (actually most people in countries like the USA, the UK or other first world countries) which is obvious with the people that do not believe in the despicable act of slavery or women having almost the same amount of rights as men (hopefully we will both have equal rights in terms of pay and such).

How did I become an Atheist? Well I was pretty much always one, when I was a child I loved the Greek myths (still do) and my parents and teachers all said that these were not true. But people believed in these gods a long time ago, it was their religion. So what's so different about the modern day religions and these ones (besides the obvious stuff like now most people believe in a monotheistic god) ? I still don't know. So I was always basically an Atheist, but I never really thought about it until recently when one of my friends asked what religion I was. Am I 100% certain there is no god? No way! I would have to be insane to believe that, but I am about 70ish% sure that there might not be a god. Honestly to me it sounds like a fiction novel (no offense).

Now do I hate religion? Well, yes and no. I'm not that happy with many of the things in the Koran, nor am I quite happy about things in the bible and the people that take the things in these books literally are quite insane and also most of them are not deserving of our love and kindness since most of these fundamentalists are hateful to others. Of course being the person I am I try avoid a fight if I run into someone that I think could be like this (thank god [yes I know it's ironic to say that] I haven't run into one of those crazy screaming fundie preachers, I might go ballistic if I hear him saying everyone's religion is wrong and that we're all going to hell). So basically I hate the bigotry and hate in these religions but I can see some of the good in these books (which, fundies don't follow, of course). Like what Jesus says such as "turn the other cheek" or "love thy neighbor" Now these I do like and I wish everyone would follow. I also like the myths in religion because it's fascinating to learn about all these different stories and see how people try to explain different things (maybe that's the psychologist in me). I also am a little more happy when I meet a Buddhist or a Wiccan because their religion is so much more peaceful than the Christians or Muslims (this is according to history, I do not know much about Buddhism, or the Wiccan religion but I will do my research when it comes time to talk about them). So to wrap this paragraph up I'm on the fence about if i like or hate religion because there are some good things in the bible and some bad, and with this you'll either get the idiotic fundie that's hateful to others, or the fundie that is really nice and caring to everyone. It is fun to study religion though, that I can agree with. Also if you are in any faith I hope you do care for your fellow man, that's all I care about, if you're a very religious person I will have great respect for you as long as this faith is really what you believe and you treat people very well.

Reminder for blog # 6: If you are religious (or non religious) respect everyone unless you do not want to be treated well. Religion is not the biggest deal as long as you treat everyone equally and respectfully. Oh and not all Atheists are not evil :P
